Segregating dial-up from broadband.

I want to know why voice chatting doesn't work for dial-up users. I want to get on the server, and I haven't gotten it to work. Could we please at least lower the bit rate so us dial-up users can talk to our friends? I really don't mean to be accusatory; I just want this done.

Hello. We had previously set the bitrate low enough for dial-up users, and no one was using the voice chat server. When we upped the bitrate, it has since been more active. So, in the interest of the ventrillo server being used, we have left it at a higher bitrate.

I know how frustrating it is for a dialdown user to wanna use the ventrilo server, because I was one of you for four years.

I'm still on slow-down, so I guess when I get a microphone, no zone chat for me. The bad thing is when people aren't smart enough to indicate that they're a broadband server, then you go on it and they make fun of you for it. I was on one and the guy's like "IIIIIF YOOOOOU CAAAAAN HEEEEEAR MEEEEE, THIIIIIS IIIIIS A BROOOOOADBAAAAAND SEEEEERVEEEEER!!!!!!!!!!" I swear, ignorance must be bliss to you people

I've ran into that same problem as a dialdown user, but there are servers that are making strides to put what their connection types are. For those who are on dialdown, a great ventrilo server to connect to is at ik-hub.net, that's internet king's server.

well, the reason I didn't use it when the bit rate was lower, was because I thought it was going to be a premium service, and I wasn't going premium, so I didn't feel the need to upgrade my ventrilo for something I felt I wouldn't be using once it became premium. I've been on other ventrilo servers where I didn't know they were broadband until I entered on them. I could usually tell if I was or wasn't making the trip, because if you aren't making it, there isn't that little click when you key the mic, and unkey. I was fortunate to be on the servers where they were nice about it though, they just told me I was breaking up very bad, but they were mature, and didn't get mean just because I'm a dial up user.

yep there is now a program, similar to ventrilo called teamtalk which is what the zone should use. each user can set his/her own bit rate, and there's definitely more flexibility with other things. I talk to ppl on dialdown a little and it's fine!

We've considered Teamtalk, but it still lacks some features that we need to make it work and integrate with the site. We've thrown out the idea of a second server for dialups before, but there wasn't a lot of interest. We can revisit it. They wouldn't be linked though, however.

Why couldn't yl you link thn I don't think its fair. I say lower the biterate so all can particapate, I mean its only talking, right? Or o is there other things that go on there. John

J.H, who knows what else goes on there?! Lol

Hi rdfreak, unfortunatelyteam talk doesn't work for me, I put in the information for andre louis server, vt.andrelouis.com, port number 7700, sound port 7701, like I was told, and it still says failure to initiate sound system, or something like that. Don't know if it's a technical issue, or if I'm missing something, or just doing something wrong, but while I was browsing around the preferences dialogues, it did an illegal operation, so don't know what the situation is. Jh_radio, if and when I can get dsl lite, I'll be in a safe haven room.

Hmmmm, not sure if Teamtalk works with windows 98.

Post 13 by wonderwoman (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Saturday, 26-Feb-2005 19:40:57

well there was a link for people with windows 9 x to install it, and it didn't say it wouldn't work with windows 98

JH, There are people who enjoy the higher quality, and I wouldn't want to penalize them. If we added a second dial-up server, anyone could use it. It wouldn't preclude broadband people; they could use both. They can't be linked for technical reasons.

Post 15 by n1umj (Veteran Zoner) on Sunday, 27-Feb-2005 21:43:14

WHy not try the dialup second server since I knoe people who'd love to use it and see what happens, I'm guessing if it doesn't get used it goes away? I don't know what's involved but if it's not much, it's worth a shot, I have broadband but dependign on who's on, I'll talk anywhere

Post 16 by Caitlin (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Monday, 28-Feb-2005 0:54:07

Ya I vote we try putting up a second server that dialups and broadbanders can go on. Might be fun.

Post 17 by faileddesign (Veteran Zoner) on Monday, 28-Feb-2005 1:26:48

hmm this has been gone through before doubt it'll have any different results

Post 18 by admin (I just keep on posting!) on Tuesday, 01-Mar-2005 14:12:26

Well there were less people around then, but we can try it again. It'll probably be a few days before it's coded, as there has to be some code updates to support it, but we'll do it soon and try it out.

Post 19 by wonderwoman (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Tuesday, 01-Mar-2005 18:53:31

well if I have to upgrade my ventrillo, I hope I don't have as much trouble with that as I have with team talk.

Admin, can you explain the technical aspects? Curious minds would like to know as to why they can't be linked. I agree aboutu putting up a second one even though I won't be useing myself as there is no mike here. If there is Vintrillo for the PAC Mate, I may be bale to use it. I know we're getting T1's here soon. John

As for linking the servers, the software doesn't support it. There has to be a way to send someone's speech from one server to the other and back. It could be done on one channel, but even that requires a dedicated computer sitting around and connected to both servers. As for coding on our end, we dynamically generate the user lists for the servers with the passwords you enter in. The same password will be active for both servers, when implemented.

Woot can't wait to get on and talk to my dial down chums. Thanks Admin!
